Clarinda Community Theatre has
chosen HONK! as this year’s summer musical. “HONK!” is a musical version
of Hans Christian Andersen’s
classic tale “The Ugly Duckling.” The musical was written by the British duo of
Anthony Drewe and George Stiles, and incorporates a message of tolerance.
Originating and widely known in the United Kingdom, “HONK!” was first given the
title of “The Ugly Duckling or The Aesthetically Challenged Farmyard Fowl.” The
show features all of the familiar farmyard characters, including Ugly, his
mother and father Ida and Drake, and his duckling siblings, Billy, Beaky, Downy,
and Fluff. However, the rest of the farm is also intrigued by this strange
looking duckling, especially the villainous cat, who thinks Ugly looks
absolutely delicious. Other barnyard friends include a bullfrog and many
froglets, a turkey who is petrified that he won’t make it to Thanksgiving, an admiral
goose and his squadron, and many more.
Directing “HONK!” for CCT is John
Olson of Shenandoah. Olson has directed numerous plays and musicals in
southwest Iowa, his most recent undertakings being “Leaving Iowa” and
“Godspell” at the Wilson Performing Arts Center in Red Oak, “Red, White, and
Tuna” and “The 25 Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” at SWITG in
Shenandoah, and “SNOOPY!!! The Musical” in Clarinda in the summer of 2010.
Clarinda Community Theatre is thrilled to have him in charge of the summer
musical again this year because of his incredible dedication and attention to
detail. Performance dates for the summer musical are August 3, 4,
and 5. Ticket information will be available closer to the
performance.
Auditions for “HONK!” will be
Thursday and Friday, May 17 and 18 from 7:00 – 9:00
PM at the First United Methodist Church in Clarinda. Those who are unable to
attend will be allowed to audition by appointment on Saturday, May 19
